Common household pests and how to identify them

6/6/2023

  1. Cockroaches: Cockroaches are common household pests that are usually brown or black in color. They have a flattened oval body shape and long antennae. Look for droppings, egg cases (called oothecae), and a musty odor as signs of their presence.
  2. Ants: Ants come in various species, but common household ants are usually small and black or brown in color. They have a distinct segmented body with a narrow waist. Look for trails of ants, especially near food sources, and small piles of dirt or wood shavings near entry points.
  3. Termites: Termites are often mistaken for ants but have a different body shape. They have straight antennae and a thick waist. Termites may be winged or wingless, and they are typically pale or light brown. Look for discarded wings, mud tubes along walls or foundations, and hollow-sounding wood as signs of termite activity.
  4. Bed bugs: Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that feed on blood. They have a flat, oval body and are about the size of an apple seed. Look for bites on your body, blood stains on sheets, dark spots of bed bug excrement on bedding or furniture, and a sweet, musty odor.
  5. Fleas: Fleas are tiny, dark brown or black insects that infest pets and homes. They have a laterally compressed body, allowing them to move through fur easily. Look for excessive scratching in pets, small dark specks (flea dirt) on bedding or furniture, and red, itchy bites on humans.
  6. Spiders: Spiders vary in appearance, but common household spiders are usually small to medium-sized with two body segments and eight legs. They can be brown, black, or gray. Look for cobwebs, egg sacs, and the presence of spiders in corners or hidden areas.
  7. Silverfish: Silverfish are small, wingless insects with a slender, elongated body. They are silvery-gray or bluish-silver in color and have three long bristle-like appendages on the rear. Look for small holes or notches on paper or fabric, yellow stains on clothing, and shed exoskeletons.
  8. Rodents (Mice and Rats): Mice and rats are common household rodents. Mice are smaller, usually 2-4 inches long, with large ears and a slender body. Rats are larger, typically 6-9 inches long, with small ears and a robust body. Look for droppings, gnaw marks, nests, and evidence of chewing on food packaging or wiring.
  9. Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes are small flying insects with long, slender bodies and narrow wings. They are usually gray or black, and females bite to feed on blood. Look for mosquito bites, high-pitched buzzing sounds, and stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed.
  10. Flies: Flies come in various species, but common house flies are typically gray or black with transparent wings. They have a short, bristly body. Look for buzzing sounds, the presence of flies near garbage or decaying food, and small dark spots (fly specks) on walls or surfaces.
It's important to note that proper identification of pests is crucial for effective pest control. If you're unsure about the identification or dealing with a severe infestation, it's recommended to consult a professional pest control service for assistance.
